Camp Biscayne

Camp Biscayne

Camp Biscayne in Coconut Grove is a gated waterfront community consisting of 26 Single family homes in the neighborhood of Coconut Grove, Miami Florida. This community was founded in 1903 by Ralph Middleton Munroe so that there would be “a stopping place in Coconut Grove, Miami, Florida” as the Peacock Inn had closed in 1902. Located a few lots south of the Barnacle (now the Barnacle Historic State Park), Camp Biscayne catered primarily to those who were interested in sailing, fishing and enjoying Coconut Grove.

Camp Biscayne: A Hidden Waterfront Gem in Coconut Grove

Tucked away in the heart of Coconut Grove, one of Miami’s most historic and lush neighborhoods, lies Camp Biscayne—a private, gated waterfront community with a rich past. Known today for its exclusive homes and serene surroundings, Camp Biscayne is more than just a place to live; it's a slice of old Miami, offering a rare connection to the city's origins.

But how did this secluded, 26-home enclave come to be? To truly appreciate Camp Biscayne, we need to travel back to the early 1900s, when Coconut Grove was more wilderness than city.

A Glimpse into Miami's History: The Origins of Camp Biscayne

In 1903, Ralph Middleton Munroe, one of Coconut Grove's earliest settlers and a well-known sailing enthusiast, founded Camp Biscayne. At the time, Coconut Grove was a hub for artists, writers, and adventurers who were drawn to its natural beauty and coastal charm. With Biscayne Bay offering endless opportunities for sailing and fishing, the area had a unique appeal, especially for those who wanted to escape the developing downtown Miami.

Munroe’s inspiration for Camp Biscayne came from a need to fill a gap left by the closure of the Peacock Inn, the first hotel in Coconut Grove. The Peacock Inn, which had been the central stop for visitors, closed its doors in 1902, leaving travelers without a place to stay in the area. Munroe saw an opportunity to create a rustic retreat for visitors who wanted to experience the magic of Coconut Grove. Thus, Camp Biscayne was born, offering a "stopping place" for people who came to enjoy the area's natural splendor, whether for a few days or an entire season.

A Retreat for Adventurers and Nature Lovers

Originally, Camp Biscayne wasn’t the upscale residential community it is today. It started as a modest camp, where visitors could rent simple cabins nestled among the tropical hardwood hammocks, just steps from Biscayne Bay. Its location, a few lots south of The Barnacle (now The Barnacle Historic State Park, Munroe’s own home), made it the perfect spot for those who wanted easy access to the water. Sailing, fishing, and exploring the wild beauty of the area were the primary pastimes.

The camp attracted an eclectic group of people, from wealthy Northerners escaping the cold winters to creatives looking for inspiration in the lush landscapes. Coconut Grove, even back then, was a community that valued the arts, nature, and simple living.

From Rustic Camp to Exclusive Waterfront Community

Over the years, as Miami grew and Coconut Grove became more developed, Camp Biscayne evolved. While the original camp structures have long since been replaced by luxury homes, the spirit of the place remains. Today, Camp Biscayne is one of Coconut Grove’s most exclusive gated communities, known for its privacy, lush surroundings, and prime waterfront location.

The homes here, often hidden by dense tropical foliage, offer modern luxury while maintaining a sense of connection to the natural world. Mature trees, winding paths, and the occasional glimpse of Biscayne Bay make it feel like a private retreat, despite being just a short walk from Coconut Grove’s vibrant downtown area.

What makes Camp Biscayne truly special is how it balances modern living with its historic roots. While the cabins and campgrounds have given way to high-end homes, there’s still a sense of tranquility and escape that hearkens back to its early days. The community remains small, with just 26 homes, preserving an intimate and peaceful atmosphere for its residents.

Why Camp Biscayne is a Hidden Gem

For those in the know, Camp Biscayne represents the perfect combination of Miami’s past and present. It offers the rare opportunity to live in a piece of history while enjoying all the comforts of modern living. The neighborhood is a sanctuary for those who crave privacy, yet it’s located in one of Miami’s most dynamic and desirable areas.

Living here means being steps from Biscayne Bay, where you can enjoy sailing or simply take in the beauty of the water. It also means having Coconut Grove’s boutiques, restaurants, and cultural offerings just around the corner. You get the best of both worlds—serenity and seclusion, with the vibrant energy of the Grove right outside your door.

Whether you’re drawn to Camp Biscayne because of its storied past or its exclusive waterfront homes, one thing is certain: this community is a true Coconut Grove treasure. It’s a place where Miami’s history, nature, and modern luxury seamlessly intertwine.

So next time you find yourself wandering through Coconut Grove, take a moment to appreciate the hidden gems like Camp Biscayne, where the spirit of old Miami still thrives amid the tropical beauty of today.
